Top Ten Words to NOT Use on Your Resume

by on December 20, 2011

You know how much it bugs you when people give you cliche answers to the questions you ask? Yes…

Well your potential boss feels the same way.  When you write your resume your future boss is most likely looking for someone that is real, honest and not trying to “SOUND” so good.

Here is a list of the top 10 Cliche Buzzwords that LinkedIn collected from its 135 million profiles:

  1. Creative
  2. Organizational
  3. Effective
  4. Extensive experience
  5. Track record
  6. Motivated
  7. Innovative
  8. Problem solving
  9. Communication skills
  10. Dynamic

If you are unfamiliar with Linkedin it is a social website for professionals.  When a user of linkedin fills out their profile they are essentially filling out a “resume” that other professionals around the world will see, just like when you put your information on Facebook and all your friends see it.

This list of buzzwords are the most used in the LinkedIn system.

Using these words will do little to set you apart from the next person handing in their resume behind you.  The person that is

“A very creative, motivated and innovative person with great communication skills.  Great organizational and problem solving abilities with extensive experience.  Also has a great track record and is a dynamic and effective leader.”

Hire that guy right now!

Instead of selecting the typical words used by everyone find something different.  Use a thesaurus or write your resume like you would talk to someone.

When it comes to landing a job you need to be the one that is set apart from the rest.  Not using these words can give you a start on that.
